Florida Keys Locksmith has done multiple jobs for us. The most recent was a small commercial building in which he rekeyed all the exterior doors to the same key. In this job, as with every job FKL has performed, he showed up on time, was very professional, was very reasonably priced, and all keys fit and worked properly. Jim has also fixed and adjusted commercial exit hardware on two other buildings which wasn’t properly installed by another contractor. Jim has also performed a variety of residential jobs for us as well – rekeying our entire house which has over 10 exit doors, installing and rekeying multiple locks on rental properties. All jobs have been performed timely, courteously and professionally.

I had mediocre locks on my doors and someone tampered with my locks. I had door locks on two doors replaced with the highest quality deadbolt double tumbler locks. I needed the work done quickly and “Florida Keys” came out the same day. Jim explained very thoroughly the different type locks he had to offer. He did not push any particular lock – he explained all the qualities of each lock.

To some of you his charge of $407.14 may seem high – because the house is vacant for a few months out of the year, I decided on the highest quality double tumblers. There is no value that can be placed on “peace of mind.”

I highly recommend “Florida Keys!” Jim the owner is a trustworthy locksmith who has lived and been in this business in the Tampa area for a long time. I do not want a “fly by night” company working on my HOME LOCKS! Do your homework when looking for a locksmith.

Do you have Deadbolts?

double-cylinder-deadboltI go out to many places and see doors that do not have deadbolts. Deadbolts are the main security on a wooden, metal or a fiberglass door. You want to have a deadbolt that has a 1 inch solid throw with a roll pin in it. The strike for the deadbolt should at least have two 3 inch screws AND two 1/2 inch screws to give you good support into your door frame. Too many times people have deadbolts installed and the strike only has two 1/2 inch screws. That really doesn’t give you much support for break ins.

The cylinder of the deadbolt needs to be protected. Their are 2 types of deadbolts; a single cylinder deadbolt which is key operation on the outside and thumb turn on the inside. A double cylinder deadbolt is key operation on both sides for doors that have glass in or near them.

Provider re-keyed 13 locks, made 8 keys and did strike work on one lock.  This was for a newly purchased home. We made a time-specific appointment about a week ahead to have the locks changed after closing. We notified Fla Keys that we were at the home early than expected, if they wanted to come early. Gary arrived, reviewed the numerous doors/locks, checked the keys we were given, helped us decide on a keying strategy, and got to work. Several of the locks were frozen, several lacked keys. Gary worked diligently for a few hours to fix the locks and rekey. He provided duplicate keys, as requested, and checked that the keys worked before he left. I will definitely use in the future, if we have any other lock needs.

Re-Keying

We get many requests from customers such as rekeying or changing a lock.  Let’s Learn the difference. When we re-key a lock, we replace the existing pins in the cylinder with new ones that will fit a new key. The old key will no longer work after this. This should be done with any new place you move into or when you have a person who has a key that you no longer want to have access.  This could be for a residential or commercial property.

Changing a lock is if your lock was non-repairable, you wanted to change the style and color, or if you wanted to upgrade to a better lock for added security.

Telephoned in the morning and Jim came right over in the afternoon. Since this is a rental apartment, I wanted to be completely sure that no keys were somewhere out in the world unknown to me. Jim re-keyed the deadbolt. He then demonstrated that the lock on my downstairs storage closet could be opened with a screwdriver.

He replaced that nonsense with a new deadbolt plus fixed the storage door so that it was no longer out of plumb and easier to open. He also supplied the six extra keys I needed and now both my front door and storage door open with the same key. Much better situation for me. All in all, great service and I saved a bit with the 5% senior discount.

Repair a door lock/handle on our front door. Our painter took the door hardware off when he repainted the door and it never worked right since. We finally called to get it repaired, since new hardware would have cost several hundred dollars. We were completely satisfied. We called a day ahead for an appointment. He showed up on time and spent about an hour and a half repairing the hardware. He even made some modifications to the internal mechanism so that it now works better than it ever did!!
