When Should you Rekey your locks?

This is when you should Rekey your locks:

Moving into A New Home:  Always change the locks any time you move into a new location, whether you’re the first or the fifth owner. You simply cannot predict how many people have a copy of the house keys.

Moving into a New Business Location/Building:  Anytime you move into your business location, you should change the locks.  If you have to fire an employee, you will want to rekey the locks and change safe combination if they had access to the safe.

Change Roommates:  As soon as a roommate moves out, change the locks. That person may have forgotten to return his or her copy or may have given copies of your house key to friends.

Change in a Company that does work for you:  A change in cleaning companies, lawn maintenance , nannies or other domestic helpers requires a lock rekeying for security.

Changing Contractors:  After a home renovation project, change your home’s locks. You trust your contractor, but you have no way of knowing which of his or her employees or sub-contractors may have had access to your house keys.

Lost your Keys or they have been stolen:  Anyone could have access to that lost or stolen key, which compromises your safety.

I had mediocre locks on my doors and someone tampered with my locks. I had door locks on two doors replaced with the highest quality deadbolt double tumbler locks. He did not push any particular lock – he explained all the qualities of each lock.

To some of you his charge of $407.14 may seem high – because the house is vacant for a few months out of the year, I decided on the highest quality double tumblers. There is no value that can be placed on “peace of mind.”

Do you have Deadbolts?

I go out to many places and see doors that do not have deadbolts. Deadbolts are the main security on a wooden, metal or a fiberglass door. You want to have a deadbolt that has a 1 inch solid throw with a roll pin in it. The strike for the deadbolt should at least have two 3 inch screws AND two 1/2 inch screws to give you good support into your door frame. Too many times people have deadbolts installed and the strike only has two 1/2 inch screws. That really doesn’t give you much support for break ins.

The cylinder of the deadbolt needs to be protected. Their are 2 types of deadbolts; a single cylinder deadbolt which is key operation on the outside and thumb turn on the inside. A double cylinder deadbolt is key operation on both sides for doors that have glass in or near them.

I called at 9:30am on a Sunday morning. My sister (lives in Palm Harbor) was out of town, and her 20yo son was home alone. An ex-friend of his who was angry attempted to cause a problem by announcing a party at my nephew’s house the night before on FB. Luckily, several of us saw the notice and intercepted, but my sister and her son realized this kid used to have a key to their house and probably still does. She called me early Sunday morning and asked if I could help him get the locks changed before he went to work Sunday afternoon. I called Florida Key and left a voice mail at 9:30am, with a message that it was not an emergency but that I would like get the locks changed that day if possible.

Jim called me back within 15 minutes. I explained the situation, he was very nice, and asked if he could meet me at her house between 11:30 and 12noon. My sister wanted the deadbolts and knob locks changed on two doors that all used the same key. He showed us the locks and how he would change the cylinders out, then when one of the deadbolts that had not been used in a long time was frozen he showed us how it would not work and why he could not remove the cylinder. We asked him to just change out the entire lock and key to match the others, which he did. He even had two different deadbolts on the truck and went through the options of the two with the differences in price point and warranty and such.

It took a bit over an hour to change the cylinders in three locks, and completely change out the lock of another. He gave us two keys and made us extra at our request. He was very nice, extremely knowledgeable, and the price was fair. The Sunday service call to Palm Harbor was $68, each rekeyed cylinder was $21, and the new deadbolt that was replaced was $100. Each extra key after the first two free were $3 each. He was fast and efficient, and clearly knows his job. I would (and will) call him.

I called Florida Keys and Locksmith this morning because of an incident in my area and wanted my locks changed. The locksmith came to my home within 45 minutes to help me. He came in, listened to my needs, looked at my locks, and answered all my questions- even though I had loads of questions. He was knowledgeable, gave me all the options to choose from, gave me prices and explained the pros and cons of issues I had.

When I made my decisions, he took care of my doors and windows. Came in and explained each lock so I would be comfortable.

I paid him and he was done. The reason I really think he was so good was that he didn’t try to oversell anything to me. I asked about a couple of issues and he told me the truth- I didn’t need that type of lock- he could have made more money from me, but didn’t take that option–So, I would definitely say that I suggest if you need a locksmith service in New Port Richey that is GREAT, contact this provider– I will use them as my go-to Locksmith from now on!!!!
